Varosha/Maras - ‘Vegas of the Med’

Express.co.uk revealed the plans by a consortium of billionaires to turn the abandoned resort of Varosha (Maras in Turkish) into the "Vegas of the Med".

President Tatar, the President of the unrecognised Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, told Express.co.uk that it is believed that the King owns the Golden Sands Hotel in the resort.

When it opened in 1974 it was the world's first ever seven star hotel and was so big it had a mini railway inside to take guests to their rooms. But the hotel was forced to close after a few weeks when civil war erupted in Cyprus, the island was divided and Varosha/Maras abandoned.

But now a plan has been put together to bring the resort which was the play area of the stars including Sophia Loren, Raquel Welch and Richard Burton, back to life again.

Under the new proposals by the consortium, Varosha/ Maras would be restored to its place as one of the world’s top holiday destinations. Dozens of casinos, luxury hotels and resorts, shops and fine dining restaurants are planned.

Dr. Muhammet Yasarata, Chairman and CEO of the Paradise and Premier Group of Companies, a leading luxury tour operator in North Cyprus, Turkey and Malta said: “For too long America has held Las Vegas as a shining example of what can be achieved through strategic investment. It is about time Europe had a contender to attract tourists from all corners of the globe."
